A semester-long study of the architecture of Catalonia placed within the historical context of the region from ancient times to present day. The culmination of the class involved a two-week tour of Barcelona, Valencia, and the surrounding Catalan countryside, focusing on careful observation of the region through sketching. My individual focus was on the unique combination of progressive technology amidst the distinct historical & eclectic identity of Catalonia. The comfortable joining of contemporary architecture with the historic city fabric reveals an underlying fanciful spirit common to all generations of Catalonians. The Sagrada Famila cathedral, the signature monument of Catalonia, is a fitting analogy for this connection between history and the present. The building is a continual community project, touched by the handiwork of multiple generations and driven by a common vision. Its design and realization is only possible through the overlapping efforts of visionaries past and present.
