Sunnybrook Golf Club: Innocent Sports Center & Master Plan

Expanding amenities for a secluded country club beyond only golf to further engage members and families.

Sunnybrook Golf Club is a country club with a reserved and peaceful atmosphere just outside of Philadelphia that is looking to expand their focus beyond only golf. Their facilities include courts for tennis and other racquet sports, but these amenities are dated and not well serviced. Looking towards the future and recalling the original goals of the 100 year old club, Sunnybrook aims to increase its membership appeal for families of all types and ages, as well as create additional draw for racquet competitions and private events. This involves undertaking planning for adding athletic and recreational amenities and improving existing facilities while maintaining the integrity of the club's culture. My responsibilities were as project manager for design and coordination of the master planning effort. The scope included a lodge building to support events, dining, and exercise along with exterior facilities such as racquet courts, a pool, parking, and reconfiguration of existing parking lots and golf outbuildings. This process involved my direction of the process to determining planning goals with client, generating documents, design options, coordination and assessment of cost estimates, coordination with consulting engineers and vendors for feasibility. I also assisted in determining phasing capabilities and implications on project to allow the most benefit to the club based on priorities of users. The project is in review by the local authorities for approval to proceed with more detailed design and construction.

Initial concept sketches for a sporting club - based on vernacular buildings, rustic lodges, local materials, traditional forms.

Design sketches and progress - multiple options explored throughout the project based on input from owner's committee.

Design massing studies - determining relationships between building and site elements at different scales.
